My longer story

My story really starts with my parent’s divorce.  It was because of their breakup that I started going to church with my grandmother.  I gave my life to Jesus at the age of 12 and felt God calling me to become a pastor at the age of 13.  During my teen years, I was studying and did all I could to learn about the ministry, preaching and theology.

I was a young man hungry for God and hungry for knowledge.  Because of some personal issues, I became very performance based.  I thought that God would love me more and pay attention to me because of what I did, and how much of it I did.  This started me on the treadmill of performance.

At the age of 19 I got married and at age 20 I became the Associate Pastor of a small church in Washington, C.H., Ohio.  After eight months, we moved to Louisville, KY to work under Drummond Thom, one of the most amazing men of God I have ever known. From him I learned about having faith in God and from his beautiful wife, Charlotte, I learned a love for the word of God.

During my time in Louisville, I did a bit of everything including Children’s Ministry, Youth Ministry, Television Ministry and Church Administration.  It was a great time and I fell in love with Louisville. Being from a small town in Ohio, Louisville was a big adventure.

After four years in Louisville, God led us to Dyersburg, TN to work with a church as the youth pastor.  From this position, I ended up working my way up to the Senior Pastor position.  I was finally doing what I was born to do.  I love pastoring.  I love watching people grow, being there for them through the good times and the bad.  I spent a total of 14 years at this church.

It was during this time that God blessed me with three beautiful children.  We were not supposed to be able to conceive children, but God gave them to us.

In 2009, my marriage began to unravel and it ultimately ended with a divorce.  It was during this tumultuous time that God began to teach me about grace and started me down a different road than the one I had been on.  My theology and ideas about church and ministry took on a totally different outlook than I had previously had.  It was scary and amazing all at the same time.

He began to teach me how to get off the treadmill of performance.

In 2012, I began meeting with a small group of people hoping to launch a church.  It never really got off the ground as I had hoped, but we had some amazing times meeting together in my living room as we learned about Jesus and God’s far-reaching grace.

In 2013, God allowed me to find love again and I married an amazing woman.  With her, I expanded my family to include two more sons, Ashton and Elijah.

In September 2014, we merged our little group with The Gathering Place Ministry Center.  It was a great move that enabled both groups to do more together than we could do alone.

Today, I concentrate on writing, pastoring, and speaking.  I focus a lot on God’s grace because of the journey I have been on.

My desire is to help the Church, really anyone on a spiritual journey, to see God’s love, grace and desire for them.  His grace is scandalous, and I want the world to know about it.

So, that’s my story.  Through this blog, I hope that we can journey together.
