What To Expect from the Holy Spirit (book review)
The Holy Spirit is very misunderstood in today’s Church. Growing up in the Pentecostal/Charismatic stream of Christianity I heard about the Holy Spirit on a continual basis. But mostly what I heard was about the gifts of the Spirit and the anointing of the Spirit. During my years of pastoral ministry and study I sadly learned that some churches don’t even mention the Spirit much at all.
Christians need to learn more about the workings of the Holy Spirit considering that Jesus gave the Spirit as a gift to the body of Christ.
Dr. Earl Radmacher wrote What To Expect from the Holy Spirit as a way to teach the Church about the true role of the Spirit within the body of Christ. The main premise of this book, which I totally agree with, is that the Spirit’s primary role is to glorify Jesus. He teaches Christians about the Person of Jesus and helps them in their walk with Jesus.
Originally published in 1983 by RBC, Jeremy Myers of Redeeming Press has updated this book for Christians today.
Dr. Radmacher covers the following topics within the book:
The Pattern of Dependence
The Power for Witness
The Protector of the Church
The Provider of Gifts
The Possessor of the Body Member
The thing that I appreciate about this book is that Dr. Radmacher believes in the gifts and talks about the gifts of the Spirit. However, he doesn’t go into great detail on the gifts and certainly doesn’t spend time on what each gift is. Rather He talks more about what the Spirit does in the life of the believer.
If you are looking for a deep theological treatise on the Holy Spirit then this book is not that. If you are looking for a book that goes into great details about the gifts of the Spirit then this book is not that either. However, if you are looking for a great book on what the Holy Spirit does in the life of the believer then this is a must read for you.“In relation to eternal life, the Holy Spirit provides indwelling and sealing. In relation to everyday life, the Holy Spirit providing filling and living. In relation to body life, the Holy Spirit provides baptizing and gifting.” ~Dr. Earl Radmacher
